Discover why New Caledonia is likened to ‘a touch of France in the South Seas’ on this introductory tour by air-conditioned motor coach. Your panoramic journey begins with a drive through Noumea’s main shopping center, passing ornate colonial homes and the colorful flame trees of the Place des Cocotiers (coconut tree square). From the FOL lookout point, take in the view of the city center, the nickel plant, and your ship docked close by. There are superb views of Nouméa and the ship as you traverse the road over Montravel. The Church of the Immaculate Conception was built in 1874 and is the oldest in New Caledonia. While exploring its interior, you’ll view exquisite stained-glass windows depicting the miracles of Lourdes. Continue back to Nouméa via the bays, and stop at la Ouen Toro Hill to survey the fine city panoramas, picturesque tropical islands and reef-protected waters. You will also step into a local restaurant for coffee, tea and French cakes. Next, visit the aquarium—a chance to see this newly renovated facility depicting the stunning marine life of New Caledonia, including fascinating prehistoric nautilus and rare fluorescent corals. Return to the ship passing the beaches of Noumea.

The aquarium was 4-star highlighting the colorful aqua life of the region, otherwise, it was a long drive with photo op stops.
I really had reservations about taking this shore excursion. I thought I might just as well walk around Noumea. I am glad I took this outstanding tour. First of all the guide was very friendly and had a natural sense of humor. His English was outstanding; he went to school in Australia and he had a delightful French and Australian accent. The strength of the tour is that it takes you out into the countryside. We learned a lot about the history of New Caledonia which fascinated me. The Church of the Immaculate Conception was beautiful and there is no way I could have found this by myself. Many, many things were pointed out and we did have two panoramic stops. We had a snack at a restaurant and I was able to use the free wi-fi. The aquarium was wonderful. Small but super impressive. The guide pointed out things we could see in Noumea itself; we went back to the ship and I took the free shuttle into Noumea to explore on my own. I discovered there wasn't a whole lot to see there so I am glad I went on the tour.
