Customer Reviews for Istanbul City Walls & Spice Bazaar

Istanbul City Walls & Spice Bazaar

Tour through Old Istanbul, crossing the Galata Bridge. Your guide will point out the Suleymaniye Mosque, one of the most important mosques of the Ottoman Empire, before you drive along the city walls surrounding the ancient city. You will also pass under the age-old Roman aqueduct on your way to the Spice Market. The Spice Market or Egyptian Bazaar was constructed in 1663 as a part of the adjacent Yeni Mosque complex, in order to generate funds for the upkeep of the mosque. This was an avant-garde concept at the time—light years ahead of the not-for-profit fundraising game. Have a look around before you return to the port—the Spice Market is the best place to purchase spices both familiar and exotic. Their pungent aromas often bear little resemblance to the supermarket variety. Fresh Turkish Delight is a hard-to-beat treat and caviar and a fascinating array of teas can also be found here.Notes:Expect dense traffic conditions in Istanbul.

The drive around the city walls and the explanation of various sights around the city were interesting, but since it was already dark, there wasn't really much to be seen. We did stop between the Blue Mosque and Hagia Sophia and were allowed to get out and take pictures. They are beautiful, even at night! The trip to the Spice Bazaar was a real disappointment. We didn't arrive there until 6:00 pm, but our guide assured us that the market was open until 7:00 pm. However, as we entered the bazaar, merchants began yelling at us to hurry up and buy stuff because they were indeed closing at 6:30 because it was Sunday. There was no excuse for the guide to not know this. Many stalls were starting to close even by 6:15 or so. Prices for spices were extremely high and there was no time for serious haggling. We found better prices (and much friendlier dealers) at the shops just outside the Grand Bazaar the next day.

This is a very good tour for first time visitors to Istanbul. Our Tour Guide gave us an informative description of all the sights of significance we saw on the tour and very helpful hints for avoiding the tourist traps inside the Spice Bazaar. It certainly whetted our appetite for our other shore excursions the following day.

The tour was good. However, we were only given 30 minutes at the Spice Market. Not NEAR enough time to experience it - and a little silly since our ship was in port for the night and spending the next day in Istanbul. We did not need to rush back. This is one of my only regrets of the entire cruise....that we weren't given adequate time there.

This was an afternoon bus-around-town tour that covered a lot of ground. From the old walls, bridges, market and a full explanation of the history of the region. We were then dropped at the Spice Market, with the understanding that it was a 'tourist trap', and enjoyed the noise and activity immensely. A great start to our visit to Istanbul!!
