History & Legends

This leisurely tour of Key West begins with a fully narrated tour on board the Old Town Trolley, covering over 100 points of interest as you take advantage of hop-on/hop-off privileges at 11 different stops around the entire island. Step back in time to the days before ‘civilization’, when fierce Natives left their enemy’s bones to bleach on the island of Bone Key. Explore what is now a lush, tropical island, and discover the charm and grace of one of America's unique architectural pleasures. Get to know characters such Ernest Hemingway and Harry S Truman as well as the magic that is Key West. You will find out about Key West’s unique role in the Civil War, and about Henry Flagler’s dream and how it came true. From bold Spanish explorers and brave wreckers to the great cigar barons and sponge magnates, Key West’s golden age is yours to discover, from settlement through the exciting days of the railroad, the doldrums of the Depression, World War II and the Kennedy era to the present. Your tour includes entry into the Hemingway Home—the house of author Ernest Hemingway (Trolley Stop #5). Enjoy a leisurely tour through the home built in the 1870s by a wealthy ship-wrecker. Ernest Hemingway arrived in Key West in the early 1930s and wrote about a dozen novels and short stories including To Have & Have Not, For Whom the Bell Tolls, and The Green Hills of Africa. After hearing wonderful stories and anecdotes, take a stroll around the beautiful property, complete with some descendants of Hemingway’s original polydactyl cats. From here it’s just a short ride to Mallory Square, where you will walk a short distance to the vacation home of President Harry S Truman. President Truman enjoyed 16 working vacations in Key West, and even joked that he wanted to move the White House here. The only Presidential Museum in Florida, the Truman Little White House has been a host to six US Presidents, as well as royalty and dignitaries from around the world. This is an independent (unguided) tour that allows you to tour at your own pace.

After reading some of the reviews, it seems that some people did not understand what this tour was about. Your price includes unlimited on and off ride on the trolley, admission to the Hemmingway House and admission to the Little White House. We had no trouble catching the trolley back to the ship, and rode it around to many points of interest. The stops are clearly marked, and I like the idea that you can do this tour at your leisure and see what you want and skip what you are not interested in. I would recommend this to anyone in seeing what Key West has to offer.

The trolly ride and overview was good. I felt the Hemingway House was a waste of time.
The Truman Little while House was good. The only problem I had was that we were left here and dumped with other tourists. When it came time to go back to the ship, we had to find our own way on foot. While it isn't a great distance to the port, you add the extra distance to go through the port authority and then to the other end of the ship to embark and it makes for a fairly long walk. I personally feel the tour company could easily incorporate a trolly ride back to the ship.

This is another tour which my husband and I enjoyed. We took the Old Town Trolley, which included stops at the Little White house and Ernest Hemingway's house.
Our guide was quite informative at the Little White House and the Hemingway House (loved the six toe cats).
The guide on the Trolley gives quite a bit of information about Key West. Would highly recommend this tour.

First I want to distinguish between the trolley ride experience and the Hemingway Home visit. As the other reviewers noted, the Hemingway Home visit was excellent with a very knowledgeable tour guide who was most informative. Being cat people, we of course also loved visiting with and taking pictures of the wonderful cats on the property. However, we didn't find the trolley ride (which probably amounted to 60 to 90 minutes) around the Island all that informative and there were no stops along the way to get off to take pictures or to look at things in depth. Then there was the foul-up at the Hemingway Home where we were not issued stickers at the beginning of the tour for entrance to the home. So we stood as a group along the sidewalk for probably 30 to 45 minutes waiting for someone from the tour operator to show up to let us in. Also this excursion doesn't return you to the ship so you have to get off this trolley and board another one (which is free) to return to the ship. I think given the cost of this excursion, a better option would be to take one of the cheaper hop on - hop off old town trolley rides and buy your own entrance ticket to whatever you want to see. My overall rating is an average of the trolley ride experience along with the Hemingway Home visit.

Booked this excursion as my husband and I are cat lovers. The train ride around town w/ all the history was a bonus. Our tour guide was knowledgable on the history of the town and quite funny. After an hour around town we went to the Hemingway House. That was very interesting too and there were numerous cats hanging around (you sometimes had to look for them in the gardens) they can blend right in with the tropical foliage when they are napping. We skipped the White House part of the tour so as to get a cold one at Sloppy Joe's and a couple t-shirts. All in all a great time.

I have wanted to go to Key West for a long time, so wanted to get the most out of our few hours there! The downtown was jammed with tourists as there were 3 ships in port, so we were very glad we had booked our tour. Our tram tour guide was excellent and so knowledgeable. We were taken through parts of the city we would have never gotten to if we had tried to do it ourselves. Hemmingway house was excellent, where our guide had a fantastic sense of humour and included some fascinating stories. We were thrilled to meet 2 of the polydacyt cats and learn how they are cared for and managed. At the end of the tour we squeezed in a brief tour of the Little White House, where we enjoyed hearing about several presidents who have visited there. All this and back to the ship in plenty of time! It was a great introduction to Key West! Next visit we will take a bike tour!

We took the History and Legends tour and it was wonderful. So much to see. The guide on the Conch Train was both knowledgeable and hilarious. The Hemingway House gives you a good stretch of the legs but not too much. The tour guides are great. Lots and Lots of cats that live there. I will do this again.
