Cathedrals of St Petersburg

Drive to the city center with an introduction to the history of St Petersburg. Your first stop is at the Cathedral of St Peter & St Paul. The Peter & Paul Fortress was founded in 1703 to defend the city, and is considered to be the birthplace of St Petersburg. The cathedral, designed by Trezini, features a gilded spire stretching more than 380 feet into the air, and is a distinctive, majestic landmark. This is the burial ground for many members of the Romanov royal family. Continue past the 18th-century buildings of the University and cross the bridge over the Neva River to the mainland. The next photo stop is at St Isaac's Square behind St Isaac's Cathedral. The cathedral, designed by French architect Montferrand in 1818-1858, is the largest church in St Petersburg with a capacity to hold 10,000 people. The interior of the cathedral is richly decorated with different kinds of marble, malachite and other semi-precious stones. From the square, it's just a short drive to St Nicholas’ Cathedral for a photo stop. Drive to the Church on the Spilled Blood, built in memory of Alexander I on the spot where he was assassinated. Combining the artistic styles of the 15th, 16th, and 17th centuries, the church is a kaleidoscope of decorative elements. The interior collection of mosaics covers more than 8,400 square yards with jeweler's enamel. The cupolas were modeled after Moscow's famous St Basil's Cathedral.

We loved this afternoon tour that took us to 3 wonderful Cathedrals. Each was unique and special in its own way. Our guide was knowledgeable about each one. We had enough time in each to savor and enjoy them. We had enjoyed the outside of Church on the Spilled Blood, and were happy to see the inside.

This was the best excursion to do in St.Petersburg if you like cathedrals. The guide was exellent, patient, takes her time to give very interesting information, to hear all very well thanks to the modern technology off a transmitter (guide) - receiver (in your ear).
It was worth every penny! Take your camera, make the most magnificent pictures, the guide gives you all the time to do that.
This guide used one hour more for this excursion than normal.
Thanks Olga!

Although all 3 churches on this tour were exceptionally beautiful, we and our tour guide were not outfitted with radios/headsets, so once we entered the very crowded and noisy buildings, it was impossible to hear the guide's explanations of the history of the sites.
I don't recommend this tour unless you know for certain that there will be radios available.

We saw all of the cathedrals on the tour & they were beautifull on the inside. The tour guides were very informative & helpful. Depending on what other tours that you do in St Petersburg, you could probably see all of this on other tours. But we were glad that we went.

This should be an excellent tour, the itinerary is great, the cathedrals are truly spectacular, and our tour guide was very knowledgeable and personable. Unfortunately, we did not go to St Nicholas’s as advertised and instead wasted 30+ minutes at a separate gift shop stop. We also did not have radios, which was inexcusable, so it was impossible to hear the guide in the cathedrals unless you were one of the two or three people standing next to her. The sights on this tour are amazing, and the tour itself, as written is great. Sadly the execution was poor and for the money paid should have been much better. I still loved the tour, but I felt cheated.
