Customer Reviews for Medieval Siena, San Gimignano & Farm House Lunch

Medieval Siena, San Gimignano & Farm House Lunch

Siena is a glorious city of winding narrow streets that cling to steep hillsides. It boasts an unmatched, enchanting medieval atmosphere and the buildings surrounding the central Piazza del Campo symbolize the golden age of the city. Between 1260 and 1348, wealthy citizens contributed to a major program of civic development, and the stunning results are still there to enjoy today. A nasty bout of Bubonic Plague and an 18-month Florentine siege worked to freeze Siena in time, and now most of its medieval buildings have been carefully renovated and restored. Your guided walking tour includes the Church of San Domenico, which contains the relics of the famous Saint Catherine—including her preserved head—and beautiful frescoes by Sodoma in the chapel. The Piazza del Duomo, with its magnificent cathedral in black and white marble, is built on Siena's highest hill. You’ll also visit the Cathedral of Saint Mary of the Assumption with a beautiful inlaid marble floor and pulpit by Nicola Pisano, and the shell-shaped Piazza del Campo with its original 13th-century palaces (the Palazzo Pubblico has been the seat of Siena government since the 13th century). Nearby is the 300-foot-tall Torre del Mangia bell-tower. You'll have some free time to shop and browse; then, proceed to a local farmhouse where estate wine and olive oil are produced. Taste these and many other products during an Italian lunch, accompanied by local wine. After lunch, you'll have some free time in the town of San Gimignano—chosen by Zeffirelli as the setting for his masterpiece Tea with Mussolini. You may choose to explore the interesting churches, palaces and shops, the Piazza della Cisterna, the Devil's Tower, the 11th-century cathedral and Piazza del Duomo, the Old Podest’ Palace, the 1353 Florentine fortress, or the simple Sant'Agostino Church that hides a heavily decorated Rococo interior by Vanvitelli—architect to the Kings of Naples.Notes:The guided walking tour of Siena is on very steep streets and a great deal of walking is required. Not suitable for wheelchairs. A short visit inside cathedral is included. Head sets will be included for the visit to Siena’s Duomo.

Okay, so this tour is expensive and it's a long day but was absolutely wonderful and I got back to the ship feeling absolutely invigorated. We had a great tour guide (Jon, an Australian who has lived in Tuscany for 18 years) and a small group of only 12 of us. The drive to Siena was great and we picked up a guide there who showed us around the top spots and then we had free time to wander. On to the farmhouse for lunch and what an absolute treat! Words can't explain how special the place was! San Gimignano was the final stop and another marvellous experience, wandering the streets initially with Jon then heading off for free time - and to buy a gelato at the World Champion shop. I would recommend this tour as one of the absolute best I have done.

Maybe the guide changed since these other reviews because ours was wonderful. I took excursions each day and this was the best. The lunch was private, just our group and lovely. San Gimignano was totally great with medieval entertainment in the plaza while we were there. Sienna and its churches were good, albeit a challenging climb. Our guide was clear, interesting, and personable. Glorious day

Livorno is far from the top sites of Tuscany, getting to the train station is a hassle, and HAL was charging half the price of this tour just for transportation to Florence, so this tour seemed my best option.
I did enjoy it, but Siena was far too rushed. Contrary to the tour description, we had no free time. And we were given 10 minutes to tour the cathedral, one of the masterpieces of Western Art.! And if we needed a restroom break, we were advised to use the one in the cathedral, thus further reducing our viewing time.
Lunch at the winery was great fun with good food and wine. However, the prices for having wine shipped home were outrageous. And the sales pitch took time we could have spent in Siena.
San Gimignano was all free time, but even so, I barely scratched the surface. I plan to return on my own to see these places again, preferably when they are not so busy. In mid October, I counted more than 40 tour buses in the Siena parking lot.

Although lunch at the Torciano Winery was great fun, and fairly tasty, the tour operator was poorly organized. They did not know where to deliver us in Sienna, so we spent about 45 mins extra on bus.
