Customer Reviews for Oia Village, Siglas Winery & Nomikos Foundation

Oia Village, Siglas Winery & Nomikos Foundation

The first stop on your tour will be at the village of Oia, perhaps the most beautiful village on the island and certainly among the most photographed sites in all of Greece. Oia was almost completely destroyed in the 1956 earthquake, but has been slowly restored continuing the ancient tradition of dwellings excavated from the cliff face, with the cave-like houses clinging to the slope of volcanic rock. The most picturesque of the two main village streets is paved with marble and lined with tiny shops, cafés and restaurants, all waiting to be explored with your guide. If you prefer to set out on your own, you can "lose yourself" in the maze of tiny streets over the rock, looking at the strange and interesting houses, superb chapels, and abandoned mansions. The views from the cliff are quite amazing, offering the best photo opportunities on this unique island. Next, you will visit the small winery of Sigalas. You will have the opportunity to wander through the vineyard and see the strange Santorini basket-like vines, watch how the wine is produced on the premises and then sample the results yourself. Your final stop is at the Nomikos Foundation. On display are fascinating three-dimensional photographic reproductions, representing the prehistoric wall paintings of Akrotiri and offering a glimpse of what life was like in the 17th century BC. The terrace in front of the building offers great views of Fira, the main town. Your tour ends with a ten-minute walk down to the cable car station or, if you prefer, you can stay in town and return to the ship at your leisure. Please note: Expect crowding and long lines at the cable car station.

This was a really wonderful excursion! For those that have never visited Santorini or Oai, we would highly recommend it. What helped a lot was the fact that we were the first bus load of visitors to Oai so we virtually had the place to ourselves and could explore without crowds and get great photos. The winery visit was an added bonus. To be honest, living in California's wine country, we were skeptical that wines from a small island would be any good. We were pleasantly surprised with their quality. The excursion ends in Fira which is also lovely and worth exploring. Don't miss having a drink and the incredible views from one of the cliff-side cafes.

This was a so-so tour. Not as good as the other ones we had done in other ports. The drive to Oia was interesting but would have liked more time to look around - only had an hour. The visit to the winery was so-so. We didn't have a tour - just sat at tables and sampled wine. The visit to the Nomikos foundation was interesting but there wasn't much there to see. Upon leaving we walked around the town trying to find out where the steps were to get down to the bottom. Couldn't find them so we hiked back and took the cable car down - not too much of a line up. If we were to visit Santorini again would do this on my own and not take any guide tours.

I was looking forward to our visit to Oia village but after the bus ride up to the village we were given barely an hour to enjoy and explore this pretty village with stunning views. Two hours would have been great. We were then driven to the Winery where we were not given a tour of the vineyards or see the basket like vines or shown how they process the wine. All we got was a very short talk and then sat at tables for wine samples. A waste of time and nothing learnt. This was followed by the Nomikos foundation which was interesting, but the frescos are replicas and the exhibition was small. We then caught the cable car back down the cliff. You need to allow plenty of time to get back to the ship as there can be quite a wait for the cable car depending on the crowd and this is not part of the tour.

So...who could not love beautiful Oia Village? We truly felt like we had stepped into a picture postcard! The amount of free time was perfect there for photos and strolling the village. At the Sigalas Winery, we enjoyed our informative visit as well as the wine tasting. Santorini's approach to vine growing is fascinating...and we found a new white wine that we both liked a lot..and my husband is a red wine enthusiast, so this was big for me! And in Fira, we were fascinated with the Nomikos Foundation tour to learn more about the excavations ongoing at Akrotiri. This tour provided everything! Beautiful views, wine, history...and the finale was the cable car descent...and, yes, the lines are long! Plan ahead...

Our guide was terrific, knowledgable, and had a great sense of humor. We had a picturesque drive to Oia village, the postcard village of Santorini, and were given some free time to roam around. Then off to the winery, with very interesting explanation how the grapes are grown in this area due to the climate, and some wine tasting. Then to the Nomikos Foundation museum, which was fascinating. And of course, lots of donkeys everywhere! The lines were exceptionally long to get back to the ship via the cable car, they had to hold the ship for us, we waited in line for about 45 minutes so pay attention to the time if you are roaming about. This was a very enjoyable day in Santorini, well worth the money. Great tour!
