Discover Hilo: Waves & Waterfalls

This tour takes you along the lush rain forest coastline of Onomea Bay—a scenic drive on the way to Akaka Falls in the comfort of a specialized mini-coach. As you slowly wind down the road towards the sea, you will be surrounded by incredible foliage and waterfalls—a true glimpse of Hawaiian paradise. Breathtaking views await you at Akaka Falls, a free-falling 442-foot waterfall that spills over a cliff of the dormant Mauna Kea Volcano. Great tsunami waves have always been a downside life in Hilo—today, you’ll hear of their capacity for devastation from a docent at the Pacific Tsunami Museum. Watch real footage of the 1946 tsunami; then, you’ll visit the beautiful Shinmachi Memorial, erected in honor of the many residents of Hilo who lost their lives. Your excursion continues to the historic King Kamehameha statue, followed by a panoramic journey through Lili’uokalani Gardens and along the famous Banyan Drive. Your excursion ends at Big Island Candies, where you can indulge in delectable handmade Hawaiian treats and 100% Kona coffee.

The tour was on a smaller comfortable air conditioned bus. The visit to the Pacific Tsunami Museum was informal and most informative. The presentation was a combination of video clips and a professional educator whose presentation was excellent and should not be missed.
Then off via a scenic drive to the Akaka Falls. The Falls could been partially seen from the parking lot but to see them fully you had to walk along a paved pathway with a number of stairs. Not really suitable for anyone who has trouble with walking or uses a wheelchair or walker. Not the most spectacular falls on the Islands but still worth the visit. The final stop along the way was to Big Island Candies, good coffee, great cookies to purchase only if you wanted.
Good shore trip not too expensive and a lot of history of the area with a lot of tropical scenery in the mix. My husband has trouble walking so declined the walk to the Falls but still really enjoyed the excursion. Nothing was rushed and shopping was an option but not expected.

Take this informative shore excursion and become familiar with the beauty and history of Hilo. Although the 25-passenger mini-coach was old and broke down, a replacement bus arrived and we continued the tour. Not-to-be-missed is Akaka Falls. For great views and to experience the relentless roar of this beautiful waterfall, take the short paved trail. The sloping, meandering pathway is surrounded by dense tropical foliage and offers many photo opportunities along the way. Savoring Kona coffee and tasting Hawaiian chocolates is a special treat at Big Island Candies and a pleasant stop on this tour.

the entire tour was very educational and interesting. tsunasmi museum was a short stop featuring a lecture by a survivor of of the 1946 tsunasmi. The short trip to akaka falls was on back roads that were surrounded by lush foilage and beautiful flowers, our tour guide (Junior) seemed to know every plant and its orgin. The falls were spectactular. Junior's humor , ukulele, and sing alongs made for a fun day enjoyed by all.
