Murder on the Moika River

Take a look at St Petersburg's marvelously dramatic history from a completely different angle—from a boat on the waterways surrounding its numerous squares, monuments and palaces. The exact route of your trip will depend on the boat size and traffic conditions of the waterways. After an hour spent on the water you will disembark your boat near Yusupov Palace, where you will discover the intriguing story of the palace, its owners and the dramatic events that ended the life of the infamous Grigori Rasputin. Yusupov Palace is located on the banks of the Moika River—one of the 57 palaces that were owned by Felix Yusupov, who was almost as wealthy as the Czar himself. A beautiful white marble staircase leads to the private theater of Zenaida Yusupov, which has been carefully preserved in Rococo style. Among the palace's treasures are works of art by Rembrandt and Rubens, French tapestries and porcelain, and Venetian mirrors and woodcarvings. It was here in 1916 that the notorious Grigori Rasputin was assassinated. He was lured to Yusupov's home and fed poison-laced food, which failed to kill him. He was then shot several times, which he also survived, and was later thrown into the Moika River, where he finally drowned. Your tour will take you through the rooms of the palace, and after climbing down the narrow winding staircase you will see the very place where Felix Yusupov, with his accomplices, tried to assassinate Rasputin.

Our particular tour was doomed from the start--bus was 1 hour late, lots of waiting in the heat and direct sun; no A/C on the bus that finally arrived, the palace was hot, no water offered or otherwise available, caught in traffic for an additional hour. We were so wilted it was hard to enjoy where we were. Despite assurances that we wouldn't miss a thing (hah!) yet still make it back to the ship on time (not), the canal tour was cut short, and we were moved through the palace with some alacrity. Still, it was great to walk in the steps of one of the most notorious events in Russian history, and we were glad to be there. Read up on Rasputin, the background of those who plotted against him, and the circumstances surrounding his death before you go--you'll get much more out of the tour. Newer revelations in the demise of Rasputin over the past 25 years seem to matter not on this tour, and are only vaguely referred to in the placards in the palace. Fair enough, given the image they are apparently determined to protect, but you should know before you go, lest you be disappointed. Our tour guide appeared to be disinterested in our group or even the subject matter, mentally reciting long-ago memorized lines, and either unable or unwilling to engage in discussion or answer questions with original thought. She made no effort to make a day that started out downhill, any better. 3-stars reflects the average of the day: 5 stars for conveniently seeing someplace I wanted to see, 0 stars for the mismanaged tour & guide.

Over all the trip was just OK. Far too much time was spent on the canal and we were rushed thru the palace. Our give at the palace was fair ( english language), but the guide on the balance of the trip was almost impossible to understand.

The boat ride was a great way to see St Petersburg & the palace was interesting. There was not much there about Rasputin, but the palace was very nice & the tour guide told us some very interesting things about the history of the palace. This is a good tour to go on.
