Kluane - Rock Glacier Hike

Looking for a moderate adventure with spectacular scenery, an array of wildlife habitats and great photo opportunities? Follow the pleasant Rock Glacier Trail and travel through wetlands and aspen stands to discover an unusual landform of Kluane: the rock glacier. The first portion of the trail is a raised boardwalk, which travels through a marshy area. It then enters a forest of spruce and poplars where numerous glacial streams can be seen. Upon leaving the boardwalk, the trail climbs onto the toe of the rock glacier. From here you will have an excellent view of Dezadeash Lake. Walking is easy on large flat slabs of rock as far as the observation area. The trail ends at this point but it is possible to continue up the rock glacier where the hiking is more difficult on loose rock. The elevation gain is 300 feet. On the day of the hike guests will have an option of joining the 'easy' Rock Glacier tour or the 'moderate' Rock Glacier tour. On the way back, stop by beautiful Kathleen Lake to savor your box lunch.

I really enjoyed this excursion, but as been referenced by others, it is good to be aware of what to expect to avoid disappointment.
It's an hour 1/2 - 2 hours each way from Whitehorse to Kluane, but it's a scenic and interesting drive. The bus driver points out interesting areas, and there's a chance of wildlife. And, if your tour hasn't come in through Haines Junction the day before, it's a great way to see more of the countryside.
The actual hike isn't very long - it's about 1 1/2 - 2 hours. The first part of the hike takes you uphill through forest, and the local guide stops along the way to point out interesting plants, geography and history of the area. The forest gives way to a rock glacier - not ice, but lots and lots of rocks. A path has been created with several overlooks and plaques describing the area. The views from the glacier are spectacular! At the top-most overlook, those that want to can explore higher for an additional 20 minutes or so. Hiking boots or sturdy shoes are a must. After the hike, you are driven back to Kathleen Lake for lunch. This is also a beautiful spot, and has a fascinating history.
After lunch, on the way back to Whitehorse, there was a short stop at a new First Nations cultural center that has a wealth of First Nations history and more information about Kluane.
It wasn't quite what I expected, but I enjoyed it for what it was. And, if your cruisetour route doesn't take you through Kluane, this is one of the few chances to experience part of the park.

The scenery was very pretty but the excursion was DEFINITELY not worth the money. All we did was climb to the top of a rock pile and look out over the countryside. We didn't have time to go any farther even if we wanted to and there really was no reason to. You could see just as much from where we were as if we climbed higher. I had wanted to do the excursion along Kathleen Lake but there were only two of us signed up for it so they talked us into this one. Big mistake.

So, I really wanted to see Kluane but I was a little disappointed in the tour. The drive out there is an hour or so each way. We drove in with the River Float group and separated once we got to the area. The hike was short and over rocks. I guess that is why they call it a Rock Hike! It was not at all what I expected. The short forest hike was the best, then you end up hiking up the rocks (Maybe 30 - 40 mins?). We then drove to Kathleen lake to eat lunch. We did not get back to the center in time to see any of the new museum and watched a short film on Kluane. The film made me realize that in order to really see Kluane you either have to really hike/camp or get on a plane. I was a little disappointed in the tour overall.

This hike is not as strenuous as you might think given the rating. If you are in good shape and hike regularly, you will be disappointed. The hike is very short. The guides were knowledgeable but it is not possible to continue on despite what the description says. You also are not likely to see wildlife when in the company of a large noisy group.
The views are great, however, and some sort of visit to Kluane is a must!
