Meet the inhabitants of the Amazon region with a visit to Bosque da Ciencia. This open-air museum is an Amazonian Research Station whose most famous project is the species revival of the Amazon river manatee. Observe these strange creatures that are in danger of extinction as they swim in a glass tank. Part of the museum is open-air, with access via trails and elevated walkways. The other part is an indoor exhibit of scientific projects under development. See the world's largest and smallest leaves, both found in the Amazon. Otters, electric eels, alligators, orchids and bromeliads are also housed here. You’ll also visit the Military Zoo, where wildlife and Amazonian fauna are housed.Notes:The ambient temperature is always high; please dress accordingly and carry water with you. The Military Zoo is of a rather primitive nature, with some animals kept in cages rather than in a natural habitat. Tour does not operate on Mondays.

Since this was a tour featuring flora and fauna, it would make sense that the guide know something of these 2 subjects. When walking among the great variety of trees and plants, our guide knew none of the names or anything about them. He was a history professor. At the zoo, we were left on our own. Also, the 2 hours in traffic, should be planned in advance so as not to shorten our time at the sites. We were not warned in advance about how long we would sit in traffic (which all the locals were aware of) and therefore were hurried through the sites.
