Customer Reviews for Cruise the Amazon Waterways & Rain Forest

Cruise the Amazon Waterways & Rain Forest

You’ll take an approximately one-hour riverboat ride down the dark waters of the mysterious Rio Negro. Here you’ll see the huts of the ribeirinhos (river people) clustered on the riverbanks. The riverboat is equipped with restroom facilities, although these may be basic. Your Amazon River cruise takes you to Lake January. At a landing platform, board a motorized, ten-seater canoe for a close-up view of the local vegetation and trees. With luck, and river conditions permitting, you may be able to admire the Victoria Regia water lilies, the leaves of which can measure up to three feet across. Back at the landing stage, you’ll have a little free time to purchase local native arts and crafts, before re-boarding the riverboat.Notes:There are 10 wooden steps to negotiate should you wish to be seated on the upper level of the riverboat. The upper level is only half covered. Wear lightweight clothing and comfortable walking shoes. Bring sunscreen and a hat. It takes approximately one hour (or more in certain water conditions) from the port to reach the Meeting of the Waters, another 60 minutes (approximately) to reach the canoe station, and then a further 60 minutes to return to the port. The river trip in the canoe will last approximately 60 - 75 minutes. Tour involves some effort during (dis)embarkation of the motorized canoes. Not suitable for guests using a wheelchair or for those with mobility limitations. Do not book 'The Meeting of the Waters' in addition to this tour, as the two tours are somewhat similar. The Meeting of the Waters can also be viewed from your cruise ship while approaching Manaus. The water level in the Amazon basin fluctuates seasonally. Occasionally, some tours that involve these waterways may be rescheduled or modified at very short notice. Minimum age is 5 years.

The meeting of the waters can be seen better from the ship. You will only miss the local guide comments. Lake January was extremely disappointing. The Victoria Regia water lilies were only 18 inches in diameter and looked to be babies placed behind a log for the tourist. The water was low and I don't believe this excursion should be offered when the waters are low.

We were fortunate to do this trip in February when the water levels are high. We were on an uncrowded double decker boat which first gave us a tour of the Manaus harbor front. Then we proceeded to the meeting of the waters which was excellent to see close up.
Moving on to Lake January, we took a 30 minute rainforest walk before we boarded the 10 person canoes for an excellent tour complete with wonderful birds and dolphins. It was far less buggy that expected.
Those who wanted to could stop at the shopping tent located at the canoe landing before we headed back to the larger boat for the return.
Just as we got out of the canoes, the skies opened up with the hardest rain I have ever experienced. It kept raining for the rest of the day so we could not be outside for the return boat trip. Everyone took it in stride as part of the "rainforest" experience.
If there is one suggestion, it would be to serve at least some kind of snack or meal. There is a restaurant at the boat landing and the smell of the great local food was very enticing.

The night before this excursion we did Lake January at night. This trip we got to see the lake in the day light. We arrived at the dock and moved to the covered canoes and toured the area. The GIANT lilly pads are huge. There was NO walking, other than moving from the boat, to the dock, to the canoes.
The meeting of the waters you can see from the ship, however on the river boat you get a much better view and have lots of time in the area. We also saw the pink dophins at this spot.

We took this tour and were not told it would differ from the description which showed it as moderate activity. The first part, going to the Meeting of the Waters, was done. We then docked at a floating restaurant and the tour leader on our boat said for those who wanted to see giant water lilies it would be a 45 minute walk each way in tropical heat and humidity.
Asked about transferring to canoes, he said there had never been such an arrangement. On our riverboat eight people who could not make the strenuous walk had to wait for an hour and a half until the others returned. We felt abandoned. We should have been told before we left the ship
I understand this is being fixed.

Even though the brochures say the tour can be altered by the lack of rain there is no way of you knowing it. The shore excursion office should be in contact with the tour operator and let the people know.Otherwise there is a one hour twenty minute walk on uneven ground.HOT<HOT<HOT. Some people would definitely change tours if this info was available.
