Costa Maya is a very small village with a cruise pier. While most people on the ship were going to see Mayan Ruins, we enjoyed going snorkeling with a small group of people. It was quite windy and rough the day we were docked, so we were concerned about where we would be snorkeling. We were assured that it was a protected bay, and it was. We 'enjoyed' a ride to our beach along a bumpy dirt road in an open air troop truck with stiff springs. It was an interesting ride as we drove literally along the beach in some spots. Our beach was a lovely stretch in a bay well protected by a reef, so there were only small waves to deal with. Our guides helped us navigate out into the bay through a series of coral mounds. Once again, the best place to be was right with the guides to be able to see the most fish, as many fish scattered as the group passed. We were lucky enough to see an Eagle Ray very close, which was very exciting even for our guides. There were plenty of wonderfully coloured fish, and interesting snorkeling paths as we manovered the coral reef. The wonderful thing about going snorkeling off a beach is that when you are tired you just went back and rested, unlike some of the previous tours we had heard about. Facilities were great for being in the middle of nowhere! We thoroughly enjoyed this excursion including the trip out and back to the port.
This starts and ends very low tech, with a 45 minute ride in an open air safari truck, but the ride was interesting. You pass through some very small villages and get a perspective of life there. Our truck also flushed out some flocks of small green parrots as we passed some tree groves. The ride gets most interesting when it gets right along the beach because the extensive devastation from the hurricane of a few years ago is evident. When you finally get to the beachside location where you snorkel, there is some trepidation about how adequate the facilities will be because of how remote the place is, but the facilities are quite nice. The restrooms are more than adequate and there even are showers available for a wash after snorkeling. Each person gets a free bottle of water and there is a nice bar with food and drink available. There also are plenty of lounge chairs and other beach facilities. Equipment is distribute in an open air pavilion and safety rules and instructions are given there. There are plenty of guides to go with each group. Everyone proceeds into the water from beachside. After everyone has their equipment on and is comfortable with the snorkeling process, the groups follow their guide out into the open water. Don"t worry, there is no surf. The reefs in the area diminish the waves and surf. At first, the snorkeling is mostly of sand bars and turtle grass, but your guide eventually gets you out into interesting reefs and snorkeling. He also points out some of the interesting sea life and even brings up some interesting things for you to handle - sea urchins, star fish, spider fish, and even some fish he caught by hand. It was interesting to watch him underwater. It was pretty good snorkeling. Afterward, we got to lounge on the beach for about an hour before heading back to the ship. This excursion is well worth the money. Special thanks to Luiz, the 2 Dannys and Christian (Mister Pancho) for a wonderful time.

We really enjoyed this shore tour. I t was some of the best snorkeling we have ever experienced. The water is not deep, so we could see the coral reef and the fish really well. The colors were amazing! The guides were excellent at explaining instructions and leading us through the reef.
