Costa Rica's Countryside & Coffee Experience

Enjoy a comfortable ride passing a variety of landscapes including rich farmland, lush forests and mountain views as you approach the highlands of Naranjo—an area famous for its quality coffee. Espíritu Santo Coffee Plantation represents Costa Rica’ most remarkable and pure coffee traditions and history. The farm is comprised of 640 acres of prime coffee plantation, where the secrets of a real cup of coffee are carefully brewed. A great team of tour guides will show you every stage of fine gourmet coffee cultivation. Your tour begins with a nursery demonstration, so you can observe the different stages of the coffee plant during its first year. The coffee is then dried under the sun, using the methods invented by Costa Rica’s past generations—thus producing a first quality coffee. During your visit to the plantation and processing plant, you will have the opportunity to see real workers fertilizing the soil, using the same organic solids produced during the cleaning and peeling process and, sweeping the coffee, which still has its parchment, under the sun to make sure it dries evenly. Meanwhile, others take care of the final process of preparing and packing the coffee for export. Your next stop is a visit to an old house where you can experience how the Costa Ricans lived in the past. This is the perfect spot for your guide to explain how the coffee used to be brewed and why, 200 years later, the local people still use a handmade chorreador instead of an electric coffeemaker. Later, you will have the opportunity to visit Sarchi’s main square to take a memorable picture of the largest oxcart ever built. This scenic town is considered the home of Costa Rica’s best ox-cart craftsmanship.Notes:Travel time to Espíritu Santo is approximately 1½ hours each way.

Travel to the plantation was a good overview of the countryside. Brief stop in Sarchi on the way - big oxcart not to be missed! Tour of the coffee plantation was interesting and definitely worthwhile. Would definitely recommend this excursion.

The tour guide, Lucia, made this tour the best of our cruise. She gained our attention right away in the most delightful manner, fed us history and current events and culture of her homeland. I was totally surprised and enthralled with Costa Rica. The plantation tour was excellent as was the souvenir shop which had lovely items for sale at reasonable prices and no hassle. Great tour in a clean, well maintained bus.

It was a worth while excursion and we enjoyed touring the coffee plantation. An hour late getting started on the tour, we would like to have had more time at the plantation. The mountain ride and venue of the plantatnion was nice and a cool relief from the heat of the coast. The shopping stop time was minimal, but a good place, and had good restroom facilities. We stopped there going to & from the plantation... a good thing! Although the ride was fairly long, we had a most excellent driver and tour guide who gave us long and entertaining dissertations on almost everything Costa Rican. On the way back we made a very brief stop in Sarchi and were able to walk around the town square for a few minutes... not much there, but a few good pictures. The guide pointed out cashew trees and picked the fruit, showing us how they are harvested. Interesting and passed the time on the ride back to the ship. The guide made this the best tour on our our cruise. I can recommend it.

We had this tour set up on Good Friday. There were not very many places open as this is a very religious country. We were going through a small village and they were having a parade down the middle of town, our driver stopped and let us get pictures. This was a wonderful experience. The Coffee tour was excellent. These folks came in on Good Friday just for us. Their knowledge of the product and the land was very enjoyable.

Really neat to see the process. Helpful guide.
Toward the end, after the roasting barn, there is one heck of a steep incline - if you have bad knees (I do) and/or breathing problems - think twice before going down.
