Authentic Embera Native Village

Your motor coach will double as a virtual time machine as you travel back more than 600 years to a Central America few people ever experience. This is a journey into the lives of the Emberá Native tribe—a proud people who maintain their traditions and lifestyle as it was before the Spaniards Colónized Panama. A knowledgeable guide will give you an overview of Panama on the way to the jungles of the Central Region and share the history and customs of the Emberá Natives who are the keepers of the rain forest and the Chagres River. When you arrive at Chagres National Park, you will leave the comfort of your vehicle to board a dug-out canoe that will take you to the Emberá village. Although far from luxurious, the dug-outs are sturdy craft which played a critical role in the conquering of the jungle and in establishing supply lines for both Natives and Spaniards. After motoring up-river, you will see the village emerge from the jungle. Keep your eyes open along the way, as the region offers abundant wildlife that is particularly active along the river’s edge. In the village, the chief will welcome you with traditional Emberá hospitality. A series of dances have been arranged to add to this cultural exchange. Feel free to wander through the village, ask questions and interact with these quiet people. As you will be a guest in their homes, a common sense approach and sensitivity to their privacy is appreciated. The Emberá men and woman are spectacular craftspeople and have produced some beautiful items available for purchase as souvenirs of this unique experience.Notes:Wildlife sightings are likely but are not guaranteed. Boarding local canoes requires only a minimum of dexterity and flexibility. The landing consists of a rudimentary "put-in" that lacks handrails or proper steps. Many hands will be available to assist; however, participants will be required to step up into the vessel. Restroom facilities are limited and basic throughout this tour; at the Emberá village only latrines are available. Tour duration will depend on the water level of the Chagres River. This tour is not suitable for pregnant women, guests with mobility limitations, or those with a history of back or neck problems.

The canoe ride to the village was an experience of a life time! The residents of the village were excited to put on their cultural show, even having the children pull out members of the audience into the act. Children are absolutely adorable, but disadvantaged. If you are feeling generous, please bring along gifts of school supplies (note books, pens, pencils, crayons, etc.. ) or they would absolutely love some soccer balls! :)

Have visited the Emberas twice. The first time was great. Only one large group was there. The second time there were way too many people and it was overcrowded. I have told others that this is a good tour but if it is overcrowded it is not a good tour.

This was one of the best tours which I have participated in. It was both informative and interactive with the Embera people. The experience included the ability to mix with these people who are essentially quite reserved and shy. We also enjoyed a taste of typical native food for lunch and had the opportunity to shop for their quite unique crafts.
One negative was that we were not provided with life jackets for the return river trip from the village to the tour bus - hence the reason for my 4 star rating rather than a 5 star rating.

A visit to the Embera Indian village is a must!. We were transported to their village on the river via a moterized duggout canoe which is their normal mode of transportation. The people are gracious and friendly. They opened their village to us, danced some of their dances, and shared a typical meal with us - fish and plantas served of a banana like leaf made into something that looked like a scoop. They showed how they made their crafts which they use or wear on a daily basis. Off course they had them for sell also.

This was a fascinating trip via dug out canoe to experience the Embera Indians' way of life. The trip was made more memorable by experiencing a tropical downpour on our return journey down the river!

Although the trip is a long one, the portion on the water is amazing as the views are beautiful. Immediately upon reaching the village everyone is warmly welcomed. The way of life is a step back in time. One learns about how these people came to be here, of what their every day life consists, how disputes are settled, and how they make their wonderful woven baskets. Enjoy and participate in their native dances and partake of freshly prepared food presented in palm leaf "boats". For us, it was but a portion of one day; for them it is a way of life.
