Customer Reviews for Shimabara & Fugen Volcano

Shimabara & Fugen Volcano

along the coastal road, passing picturesque Ariake Bay and heading out onto the Shimabara Peninsula. The city flourished in the early 17th century, after the construction of the magnificent Shimabara Castle. Enjoy a guided visit to the renovated castle, which is now open as a museum of ancient Christian history. On display are old swords, armor and other items from the Edo period. Following your tour of the castle, set out on a walking tour through Shimabara’s Old Town and visit the Samurai District. After a Japanese-style lunch at a local restaurant, the tour will continue a village destroyed by the Fugen Volcano. After standing quiet for more than 200 years, the volcano suddenly erupted in 1991 burying a small village and killing 48 people. Today you can still see the ruins of the houses through the mud and lava rock. This scenic tour will give you an opportunity to see old Japan and marvel at its incredible history.
