Enjoy a traditional Oaxaca dinner while admiring the regional dances of La Guelaguetza. These dances are performed by a professional group in the exclusive Castillo Huatulco Hotel Beach Club. La Guelaguetza is widely known to reveal the colorful diversity that is typical of Mexico, and especially to the state of Oaxaca. This dance custom is eminently a social activity; born among the Zaez indigenous tribe in the 16th century, each costume and dance having a local indigenous historical and cultural meaning. The word Guelaguetza comes from the Zapotec language and is usually interpreted as the "reciprocal exchanges of gifts and services" in keeping with the importance in indigenous cultures of sharing, reciprocity, and extended community. Each year, on the first two Mondays after July 16th, the eight regions and 16 ethnic groups, with their own languages and dialects, come to the state capital for the annual "Mondays of the Hill" or Guelaguetza celebration.
