Customer Reviews for 4x4 Island Adventure

4x4 Island Adventure

Board a four-wheel-drive vehicle at the pier and set out to explore the eastern and southern parts of Bonaire. Part of the trip will take place on paved streets; the remainder on dirt roads, which can be dusty or muddy and bumpy at times. You’ll leave Kralendjik, Bonaire’s capital, and travel through town heading in easterly direction. Eighty minutes and many dirt roads later, you’ll be heading along the wild east coast to explore the area of Washikemba with its colossal cactus, wild donkeys, iguanas and birds. Along the way you'll stop to take photos and hear information. Arriving at Lac Bay, watch the windsurfers brave the trade winds in the warm shallow waters. Your tour continues on paved roads, passing the Willemstoren Lighthouse, Bonaire’s oldest lighthouse, en route to the slave huts and the salt mountains. You'll see the stone huts that slaves crawled into after working the saltpans, and perhaps spot a few flamingoes in the distance as your guide explains about the salt production. Just a little bit further, you will pass through Belnem, which brings you back to town and to the cruise ship pier.

Enjoyed this tour, though wish the guide had been easier to understand, and had understood our questions better. This open air ride was extremely windy, but we did get to see a lot, and learn a lot about the production of salt, old and new. Got the opportunity to see flamingos, and watching the windsurfers was fun as well. Lots of beautiful bird sightings, and a pleasant tour, but wind, sand and dust were definitely a factor.

I REALLY enjoyed this 4 x 4 adventure. We boarded a 4 x 4 that had a covered roof, but was open aired. Not too hot in Dec. I highly recommend sitting in front by the cab as I had the best spot for photos!!! Also hope you are in the lead jeep. I feel we may been able to see more since a lot of iguanas, etc. would quickly run off the road upon our approach. The tour really takes you in the "outback". We saw many wild goats, iguanas, and wild donkeys. When we were heading to the salt mines and slave huts, we saw many flamingoes. We stopped at the wind surfing spot on the island to use the restrooms - the absolutely most gorgeous waters. Felt like we got to see SO MUCH! Took so many wonderful pictures. A must if you enjoy nature vs the town setting. Roads were truly dirt road, but not too bumpy. My mom had had back surgery in May and was using a cane, and she had no problems. Biggest challenge was the high step into the jeep. They just placed a cooler there as an additional step.

Land rovers with plastic seats in back were the mode of transportation
Our guide wasn't fluent in English thus posing a problem in communications
There is no recycling or refunding of plastics or bottles in Bonaire. The shoulders of the dirt roads are their garbage dumps. The beach facing Venezuela is covered in plastic of all shapes, colors and sizes. Our guide stated their garbage originates there!!
Saw a wild donkey, some iguanas goats, sheep and flamingos from 150 yds away.
Not worth the money we spent.

Our guides were very interesting and knowledgeable about the island. We saw parts of Bonaire most people do not visit. The visit to the salt flats and it's history was particularly interesting to me. After the tour there was still time to do some shopping near the port.

If you like getting off the beaten track, you'll like this excursion. We had a great guide and saw parts of the island normal cars wouldn't drive to. We learned a lot of history about salt mining. I loved the rugged East coast with the waves hitting the rocks. We saw all the wildlife described and had plenty of opportunities to take pictures.
