Lunenburg & Mahone Bay

The craggy shores of the Lighthouse Route are dotted with picture perfect seaside villages, old captains’ mansions and working waterfronts. It’s a one-hour drive from Halifax to Mahone Bay, famous for its picturesque scene of three waterfront churches and coastal charm. From there it’s only 15 minutes to the coastal town that claims to be the prettiest town in Canada—lovely Lunenburg. Settled in the mid 1750s by Germans and Swiss, Lunenburg was once the busiest shipbuilding towns in the world. It was the birthplace of the world-famous racing schooner Bluenose. Lunenburg is still a bustling fishing port and its citizens retain one of the most interesting accents in North America. The town’s distinctive architecture and extraordinary scenic beauty is a colorful reminder of Canada’s maritime heritage. Enjoy free time to explore the simple coastal beauty, folk art, and shops, or just stop and talk with the local residents of this famous waterfront town. For those that wish, the guide will offer a short interpretive walk on the waterfront, highlighting Lunenburg’s significant seafaring history.

My husband and I had been to Halifax twice before, so we thought that we would take this excursion out of town. It was wonderful. We had Robert as our guide, and his knowledge and enthusiasm was contagious. We started with a brief tour of Halifax as we left the dock and continued to Mahone Bay. We stayed there approximately an hour and the town is picturesque with tiny shops to visit. We then headed to Luneburg. The architecture is mostly wood with beautiful German influences and the buildings are painted in beautiful colors. The shoreline is lined with everything from yachts to fishing boats. We had ample time for lunch on our own and we could walk and explore the town. The tour was all day; we had gorgeous weather and a wonderful guide. It was wonderful to visit these historic small towns away from the big city of Halifax. Really enjoyable.

Our Halifax tour guide recommended we go to Lunenberg, which is a Unesco World Heritage sight. That is why we chose this excursion which also had a stop Mahone Bay. These towns are very picturesque. The buildings are very colorful. Our guide discussed the architecture. It was clear that the craftsmen who built these homes paid a lot of attention to detail. Some homes had a Lunenberg Bump above the front door. Some homes had Widow's Walks too. Lunenberg has a memorial to those fisherman lost at sea. It was sobering to see the list of names from each year - and how many members from the same family lost their lives in a given year. We had enough time in Lunenberg to walk around and explore the area, shop and dine. On the way back to the ship we stopped for about 45 minutes in Mahone Bay. We visited Amos Pewter where we were given a demonstration on how they made things out of pewter. It was very interesting. Afterwards, we walked around a bit more and then made our way back to the bus. Mahone Bay and Lunenberg were about 1 to 1.25 hours from the ship so we really got to see a lot more of scenic Nova Scotia. We would recommend this trip.

Our guide, Robert, loves the town of Lunenburg and it showed. A retired history teacher, he was a great story teller and took extra special care to ensure that we'd love Lunenburg as much as he did. Fun trip even with socked-in fog and mist.
