The elephant is perhaps the most misunderstood animal on the planet—it is also Thailand's national symbol. A visit to ElephantStay, a non-profit organization, offers a hands-on, heartwarming introduction to the Asian elephant. You will step into an entirely different world at the most exciting, innovative, working elephant village in Asia. The program involves caring for and learning about elephants with a primary focus on the conservation of the species and humane treatment of aging elephants. In the working world, elephants that are too old to earn their living are often treated poorly and left to suffer in appalling circumstances. This facility offers quality of life for elderly elephants, training and handling for active elephants, and a safe birth and nursing environment for newborns. The center is located a scenic three-hour drive from the ship at Laem Chabang, near the ancient city of Ayutthaya. From the Ayutthaya Elephant Palace, you’ll take a once-in-a-lifetime ride on an elephant through the historical center of town. Then, spend some quality time visiting the mothers and babies in the breeding program. You can buy food to feed the elephants or make a donation to contribute to their care. There are fewer than 4,000 elephants left in Thailand (wild and domesticated) so the breeding program is important. By visiting the facility you are contributing to the provision of food and a safe, clean home for these precious pachyderms—part of your admission fee is returned directly to the maintenance of the complex and nurture of the elephants. After your visit, re-board the coach for the return journey to the pier.
