Customer Reviews for The Silk Tale

The Silk Tale

Silk is one of the oldest textile fibers known to mankind. During the Roman Empire, it was sold for its weight in gold. Here in Konavle Valley, near Dubrovnik, women keep alive the ancient craft of silk production, not for profit but for the sake of tradition. The silk thread produced here is mostly used for embroidering the beautiful national costume of the Konavle region. In the 1990s, during the war in Croatia, the Konavle Valley was occupied by hostile forces and many of its houses were sacked and burned down. Along with the houses, hundreds and hundreds of handmade national costumes were lost. After the war ended, the women of Konavle decided to start from scratch so that they could leave a piece of their beautiful heritage for future generations. They started making the costumes even when they were still refugees. Several volunteer groups were formed to help. This Cruise with Purpose excursion enables you to share in this magnificent cultural endeavor as you produce a silk thread in the age-old, traditional manner. The thread you produce will be used to embroider new costumes. Listen to an explanation of the whole process, from cocoon boiling, to thread reeling, dyeing, plying, reeling, weaving, and embroidering. Enjoy the hospitality of a host family in the village and connect with some of this ancient country’s profound cultural values as you actively participate in their rebirth and restoration.

A lovely tour , showing how the people all used to breed and grow their own silkworms in their homes in days gone by . This lady is trying to keep the craft going with mulberry leaf munching silk worms on trays ,and cocoons hanging from rafters and broom branches .The silk produced is used to make collars for ladies blouses different patterns denoting various stages of the ladies lives .ie. single ,engaged, married ,mother , widow . She also made spectacle cases ,little purses, panels for handbags etc. A very interesting outing

this was not our first choice as the tour we were booked on was cancelled so it was chosen second but what a great afternoon, only 15 of us in a small van a beautiful drive up the coast then into a small country town where were greeted by this wonderful lady dressed in traditional costume and shown into her studio silk worms hanging from every beam we were served tea with beautiful home made cake and given a demonstration on the whole process from the tiny eggs to the beautiful fabric and also a wonderful insight into the creation way of life, mostly ladies on this tour but the few men that were there all were very impressed by this lady and her wonderful craft, a few moments to shop in her gallery was wonderful sadly they didn't take euros so shopping was limited unless you had the local currency, was a magnificent drive back along the coast at sunset and a wonderful finish to the day

If you have been to beautiful Dubrovnik many times this makes a nice change. The artist who started the program is very articulate and gives an interesting presetation. The refreshments were excellent.
