Immerse yourself in the traditional Australian way of life as you spend the day with a local family on a private sheep farm. Duncan Barber is a man with a big personality, and he and his family welcome you into their home and delight in showing you true Aussie hospitality as you join them at the farm for a day packed with warmth, laughter, good food and wine, information and new experiences. Upon arrival at the property, you will be invited inside the homestead to freshen up and enjoy a delicious morning tea of scones with jam and cream, freshly baked cakes and bars, and tea and coffee. Duncan and his wife, Jess, will chat with you about life on the farm and will offer an introduction to the day's activities. Move across to the woolshed where you'll see an impressive sheep-shearing demonstration, and Duncan will explain how this beautiful natural fiber, wool, is graded and what it is used for. The sheep at Coliban Park are one of the oldest recorded flocks in Australia, bred to produce the finest wool and the healthiest, hardiest animals. Duncan will also show you the details of preparing and classing a fleece, and discuss what process the fleece goes through to become an ultrafine merino wool product. You'll also watch an endearing and astonishing performance as Duncan puts his Australian sheep dogs through their paces. You will be amazed at how he commands the dogs as they round up the sheep and bring them in. The synergy between dog and man is a thing of rare beauty. Throughout the day you'll have the opportunity to talk to Duncan and his wife about life in Australia in general, and farming in particular. After the morning's activities, return to the homestead to enjoy a delicious three-course traditional Aussie barbecue lunch, accompanied by a fine selection of Australian wine, beer, soft drinks and water. This afternoon you'll discover that protection of the natural environment is a subject very close to Duncan's heart. To commemorate your visit to Coliban Park and to help generate habitat for the wild kingdom, you will help to plant a native Australian tree on the property. This enhances the natural environment, reduces soil salinity and promotes the wellbeing of wildlife in the area. The reward for your participation is a chance to observe wild kangaroos in their natural environment. Some 1,500 kangaroos live on the Barbers' property, existing in harmony with the farming enterprise around them. Thanks to Duncan's habitat generation, they remain wild and don't rely on humans to feed them. Viewing them in such close proximity is a breathtaking and spectacular conclusion to your visit. At the end of this exciting and memorable cultural exchange at Coliban Park, you will return to your ship.
