Customer Reviews for The Ghosts of Old Quebec

The Ghosts of Old Quebec

As the skies begin to darken, your costumed tour guide strikes a match and lights his lantern. Anxious participants wait in anticipation for a glimpse of creepy Québec. Step into a gory and gloomy past for a walk through the dark side of the Old Town. Stroll with your guide to hear tales of more than 300 years of murders, executions, mysterious ghostly sightings, tragedies and hauntings. The cobblestone streets and ancient buildings set the stage for your fascinating visit to the less salubrious of this ancient spectral city.Notes:This tour is designed to fascinate rather than to frighten; however, it is not suitable for children under 12 years.

Be forewarned. You will be walking up (and down) a few steep hills and the guide can set a brisk pace. So you need to be in good physical shape with no mobility issues. I also recommend wearing a good pair of comfortable walking shoes. But if you are up to the challenge and want to explore the darker side of Quebec City's colorful history, this excursion is a lot of fun. At least that was my experience. I highly recommend it.

I need to preface this review with the fact that I wasn't able to finish even half of it. Our guide (think budding actor) was extremely dramatic but at times very hard to hear as the wind was blowing quite strongly that evening. We were told we would be walking from the terminal as a group to the first stop but our guide took off at quite a clip and never looked back. You will need to walk uphill to get to the first stop in the upper city streets. By the time we arrived at stop 1, we had missed half of the story. I am out of shape so decided after stop 1 to drop off the tour, as did my traveling companion. We did know our way back to the ship so that wasn't an issue but were very disappointed that the shops were already closed (even though the ship was staying over night) so we couldn't even shop on the way back.

The guide introduced himself not as a tour guide, but as a performer.
Actually he is an actor by trade and definitely knew how to spin a few great ghost stories. Be warned...it is a walking tour ! If one enjoys walking tours, then this is one of the best that I have ever done.
Quebec City should be explored on foot anyway, so this walking tour is also a great introduction to much of the historical ambiance of this medieval city.
Vieux Quebec is so old and with so much history, it absolutely must have ghost running about. It was an honor to be introduced to a few.

Our tour guide was a very dramatic budding actress and she did give us a number of stories. However there were several folks on this tour who were not as young and agile as the guide. She would begin the story before everyone was in place. Then, at the end of the tour she said we would walk back at an easy pace to the ship. She then took off and was soon out of sight to a group of 6 of us who were not as fit as she. Thank God my husband had been out walking earlier in the day and knew the way back to the ship . Nor did she wait at the ship either to see if this group ever made it back. I felt that her behavior was extremely unprofessional at best. There were 3 ladies at the back of the group who were terrified because they had no idea of where they were until my husband reassured them that we would wait for them and make sure they got back to the ship safely. Perhaps our guide was one of the Quebec ghosts? To be honest I feel we should be reimbursed for the cost of the excursion it was so unsatisfactory.

A proper rating would be "strenuous activity."

We had no idea this tour would involve walking up extremely steep hills to the top of the city. Some people discontinued and went back to the ship. The people on this tour were closer to "elderly" than "young" and it was very taxing on those of us who stayed with it. But otherwise, it was delightful walking through those lovely streets at night.
