Jewish Heritage of Curacao

This tour explores Curaçao's Jewish heritage and visits the Western Hemisphere's oldest synagogue. Board your air-conditioned transportation and drive to Willemstad's Scharloo District, home to old colonial mansions built by the island's Jewish merchants. Intolerance and the Inquisition drove Iberian Jews first to Brazil, then to Curaçao. The island's thin volcanic soil made conventional farming a near impossibility, forcing the immigrants to turn to commerce. Visit Beth Haim Cemetery, consecrated in 1659, and a repository of superb funerary art. Drive to Landhuis Bloemhof, mansion of a Sephardim family, bought by Mrs Emma Maduro-Lopez and used in the past as a family retreat and vacation house. Tour Landhuis Bloemhof with its excellent collections of art and some artifacts from Curaçao's Jewish past. Your final destination is Mikve Emmanuel Israel, the oldest synagogue in constant use the Western Hemisphere, built in 1732.

I was a little hesitant to go on this excursion since I had read previous comments, but did so any way based on the latest review. My husband and I were so glad we did. Our tour guide was very knowledgable and enthusiastic about the Jewish heritage of the island. Not only did we learn about the Jewish hertiage, we got to see much of the island from the comfort of the tour van. I would recommend to anyone interested in Jewish Heritage or who would like to see more of the island. I actually went on this cruise in January 2013, but the options would not allow me to choose the current year.

Perhaps the tour has changed for the better since some of the reviews were written, but my wife and I thought this was an excellent excursion. The lady who ran it thoroughly knew the material, gave a good lecture at the synagogue, and seemed glad to answer all questions. While the Temple is a fairly short distance from where we docked, it is on the far side of the pontoon bridge and might be a bit much for an elderly or infirm person, though Willemstad is a very walkable city. The synagogue itself was quite interesting, and had a good museum next door, with just enough time to view it.
Getting to and from the art gallery gave a good view of the larger metropolitan area that you couldn't see just by walking off the ship. The gallery itself was in an interesting old plantation and does have a Jewish connection through some of the owners' family connections. Finally the old, now disused, cemetery--right next to the oil refinery--was touching and worth the short stop.
We consider this to have been a worthwhile tour.

We took this tour to learn about the Jewish heritage of the island. Unfortunately, the tour guide was not well-versed and had little to offer...and got extremely impatient with us when people asked questions. We got to stop and visit the Old Jewish Cemetery, but did not have a chance to visit the new cemetery. There also was a stop at a plantation house of some famous artist, which had nothing to do with Jewish heritage. The tour ended downtown at the synagogue, which was exquisitely beautiful. But, it was was a short walk from the ship, so next time we will save our money and just walk into town and visit the synagogue on our own. Very disappointing tour, especially for the price.
